UT debuted its new record-size bass drum. What does that mean for 100-year-old Big Bertha?

“Everything’s bigger in Texas” is a slogan for a reason.

The University of Texas helped uphold that reputation Saturday when it unveiled its newest addition, Big Bertha II, the world’s largest bass drum.

Big Bertha II, the drum custom-built for the Longhorn Band, measures just over 9.5 feet in diameter and 55 inches in width. It also plays the lowest note ever on a bass drum, according to a university news release.

Its predecessor, Big Bertha, which celebrated its 100th birthday this year, measured 8 feet in diameter and 34.5 inches in width.

The two drums played side-by-side during the UT-Iowa State game halftime show for the first and last time before Big Bertha was entered into the Frank Denius Family University of Texas Athletics Hall of Fame.

“We’re not saying goodbye to Big Bertha, but we felt like her centennial was the perfect time to honor her by moving her to the Hall of Fame,” Longhorn Band Director Cliff Croomes said in the release. “We’re excited to introduce Big Bertha II to our fans and to have a new drum that this generation and future generations will be able to enjoy.”

The original Big Bertha — built by the University of Chicago in 1922 and purchased by the UT band director in 1954 —has been a symbol of sorts for UT for decades. The drum leads the band onto the field for home football games and is played during the national anthem, the university’s alma mater, and after the team scores.

She’s also done her share of traveling, including to the Rose Bowl in California and London for the Longhorn Alumni Band’s performance in the city’s New Year’s Day Parade, as well as TV appearances for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Shipping Wars.

Its namesake is the World War I-era German Big Bertha howitzer because of its sound and volume.
