December’s weather pays us a visit this week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The cold front is here, but the coldest weather won’t arrive until Wednesday.

A layer of clouds will remain over Southeast Texas Tuesday, but it should remain dry. The north wind will hold steady around 10 mph as it blows in cooler and drier air. Morning lows will bottom out in the upper 40s to mid 50s across most of Southeast Texas.

There will still be plentiful clouds on Tuesday, but sunshine will break through to warm highs into the upper 60s and lower 70s. Eventually the clouds will clear out late Tuesday setting the stage for even colder weather Tuesday night.

How cold will it get behind this front?

Our coldest morning will come on Wednesday when temperatures drop into the 30 and 40s across all of Southeast Texas. Houston’s low should dip into the low 40s for the first time since March 25th. North of Houston we expect lows in the mid-to-upper 30s. The air will be incredibly dry, so frost is unlikely but cannot be ruled out.

How long does the chilly air stick around?

Thursday morning will also bring lows temperatures in the 40s, but the southwest wind will pump the high all the way up to 80. Dress in layers! Temperatures will continue to trend up through the weekend as the sticky Gulf air returns by Sunday.

What’s happening in the tropics?

No new tropical development is expected in the Atlantic over the next 5 days, but we’re eyeing a developing storm in the Pacific that could bring rain to Texas next week. For the very latest check out our daily tropical update.
