Police in Southlake shot a man who authorities said pointed a gun at the officers Monday afternoon and is believed to be involved in a fatal shooting in North Richland Hills earlier in the day.
Around 12:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Weyland Drive in North Richland Hills in response to a shooting in a parking lot, according to North Richland Hills police. A 26-year-old man, who later died, was found at the location, they added.
People who saw the incident told police that someone drove away from the area in a gray or silver sedan.
Investigators identified a 28-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released by police, as a “person of interest” and communicated that information to Southlake police.
Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Monday, the Southlake Department of Public Safety tweeted there was an officer-involved shooting near the intersection of the eastbound service road of State Highway 114 and Carroll Avenue near a Chuy’s restaurant.
Southlake Police Chief James Brandon said during a news conference that police shot the person of interest during a traffic stop after he got out of his vehicle and pointed a gun at officers.
Brandon said four Southlake officers fired their weapons and struck the man. He was taken to the hospital, and his medical condition was not available.
It was not immediately clear if the person of interest fired a weapon, Brandon said.
North Richland Hills police said Tuesday that the gunman’s ex-girlfriend was dating the victim of the fatal shooting in that city.
The Southlake officers involved in the shooting were a captain, a sergeant, a corporal and an officer, Brandon said. Their experience ranges from eight to 31 years, he said.
Texas Rangers are investigating the police shooting and the officers involved were placed on protocol administrative leave, Brandon said.
