Man acquitted on murder charge in 2018 Fort Worth shooting

An Alvarado man was acquitted on a murder charge in the 2018 slaying of another man in Fort Worth.

A Tarrant County jury found Adan Zaragoza, 35, not guilty Thursday, said his attorneys, who argued that he acted in self-defense. The jury sentenced Zaragoza to five years of probation on the lesser charge of deadly conduct.

Zaragoza was giving a friend and her child a ride to a West Fort Worth home Feb. 18, 2018. The vehicle was approached by the child’s father — 35-year-old William Breeze — who pointed something at Zaragoza and threw a rock at his windshield, his lawyers said.

Attorneys said Zaragoza’s friend and the child got out of the vehicle before the father approached the open passenger window. Zaragoza fired his weapon and struck Breeze in the chest; Breeze died later that day at a hospital.

Zaragoza’s attorneys said his actions were justified under Texas’ “castle doctrine.”

“If you are under attack in your vehicle the law protects you the same as if you were under attack in your own home,” Zaragoza’s lawyer, Justin Sparks, said in a written statement. “Places where we all should feel safe and protected.”
