Errol Spence Jr., the welterweight boxing champion from DeSoto, was involved in a car accident Saturday evening in his hometown.
In an Instagram Live video, Spence said he was hit by a car that ran a red light. He said he was glad his kids were not in the car with him.
“It always happens to me,” he said.
The footage showed an SUV with major damage to its front end.
DeSoto police confirmed Sunday morning that Spence was involved in an accident at Danieldale and Hampton roads. A department spokesperson said it was reported that a vehicle ran a red light and struck Spence’s vehicle.
No other details were immediately available from police, and a spokesman for management company Premier Boxing Champions said in a text message Saturday night that he had no information beyond what was in Spence’s Instagram video.
Spence was in a serious car accident in October 2019 when he crashed his Ferrari at high speed without wearing a seat belt just outside downtown Dallas. After an extensive recovery, he pleaded guilty this June to a driving while intoxicated charge related to the accident and pledged to use his platform to warn against drinking and driving.
“Fortunately, no one else was involved in the accident, and I am most grateful for that,” Spence said in June. “It was an incident that would profoundly change my life.”
Spence is 28-0 as a professional. He’s No. 4 on The Ring’s pound-for-pound boxer ratings, No. 5 on the Complex pound-for-pound boxer rankings and No. 6 on DAZN’s list. He has won 22 of his bouts by knockout, with the other six coming by decision.
He currently holds the WBC and IBF welterweight titles and the WBA (Super) welterweight title, which he earned in a win over Yordenis Ugás at AT&T Stadium in April, a 10th-round technical knockout.
A long-awaited undisputed welterweight championship fight between Spencer and fellow unbeaten boxer Terence Crawford (38-0) was reportedly close to happening this fall.
Spence has no fights scheduled after the matchup with Crawford failed to materialize.
In November, the WBC ordered Spence to defend his welterweight title against Keith Thurman, but there is no agreement yet between the fighters. Crawford successfully defended his WBO title against David Avanesyan on Saturday night.
