Quaid-i-Azam University students take classes at bypass project site

SLAMABAD: Many students of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) took classes at the construction site of the Bhara Kahu bypass in protest against the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the federal government for using a portion of the university land.

An official of the university said some classes were held at the construction site and from Wednesday more classes will be held there.

The CDA is executing the 5.6km bypass road project.

The starting portion of the road, according to its alignment, crosses from the university area.

According to the civic authority, 199 kanals owned by the university falls in the alignment and against this land it has already issued an offer letter to provide alternative 225 kanals to the university.

However, the faculty and students are of the view that the road will bisect the university and instead of the bypass the CDA should go for a flyover project.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) had allowed the CDA to resume work on the construction of the project on the QAU’s land after it dismissed multiple petitions submitted by the faculty members and the university administration against the scheme.

IHC Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb issued a short order in which he declared that “for detailed reasons to be recorded later, the instant writ petition as well as the connected writ petitions are dismissed.”
