Hard freeze and dangerous wind chill temperatures area-wide

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Our powerful cold front moved through yesterday as expected, and now we are waking up to temperatures in the teens and gusty winds that have wind-chill readings around 0 degrees.

How many hours could we stay below freezing?

Houston and most of Southeast Texas could stay below freezing this evening through Saturday morning. Some areas along the coast may briefly climb above freezing Friday afternoon, but that will not be the case for most of us. Total consecutive freeze time could be around 45 hours. This is similar to the February 2021 freeze.

How cold will the wind chill make me feel?

The wind chill is the apparent temperature you feel due to the effects of the wind and cold weather on your exposed skin. Windy conditions will make the wind chill feel close to 0 degrees or colder Thursday night and Friday morning. These are dangerous levels that could allow frostbite to occur in about 30-60 minutes of exposure.

How many hard freezes will we see?

At least two. A hard freeze area-wide Friday morning, and another Saturday morning. Some locations will also see a hard freeze Christmas morning.

How does Christmas look?

We’ll get the cold Christmas that many were asking for. On Christmas morning we’ll wake up to temperatures in the 20s, with a high temperature in the 40s.

Do we ever warm back up?

You bet! It’ll be a slow and steady warming process, which means still cold weather through the weekend, but high temperatures reaching the low 70s by the middle and end of next week.
