Weatherford police fatally shoot driver of suspected stolen vehicle after chase, crash

The driver of a suspected stolen vehicle was fatally shot by Weatherford police in Parker County after a chase ended in a crash Saturday morning.

About 8 a.m., officers were called to York Avenue after reports of a person driving a stolen car from Georgia, according to the Weatherford Police Department. The driver’s identity was not released.

Once officers found the car, police said the driver led them on a chase before getting into a crash at the intersection of Ric Williamson Memorial Highway and Mineral Wells Highway. The department’s policy about when to pursue vehicles wasn’t immediately available Saturday.

The driver then got out of the car and opened fire on officers and state troopers, who assisted with the chase, according to police.

Weatherford officers returned fire, striking the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting. No additional information was immediately available.
