Warmer weather returns with sea fog and storm chances

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A warm front is on the way to Houston, and that’s going to bring back mild temperatures along with sea fog and rain chances.

Temperatures overnight should stay above freezing everywhere, but it will dip into the 30s for a few hours. As the south wind pushes in humid Gulf air, temperatures will climb into the 40s by sunrise. During the afternoon temperatures will push into the upper 60s and low 70s as the warm front moves inland. Because the ground and shelf waters are cold from our recent cold snap, the humid air passing overhead will lead to a lot of condensation, clouds, and sea fog. A strong south wind should keep the fog from getting too dense, but there will be a distinct haze in the sky, especially along the coast. Drizzle, mist, and light showers will be possible at any time.

How warm will it get this week?

High temperatures will peak in the mid 70s Thursday with low temperatures climbing into the mid 60s. Our average high this time of year is in the mid 60s and our average low is in the mid 40s.

When can we expect thunderstorms?

An upper air disturbance approaching Thursday and Friday will bring back widely scattered showers and thunderstorms. We expect the heaviest thunderstorms to move through from Thursday afternoon to Thursday evening. Some of these will drop a quick inch or two of rain that could lead to isolated street flooding.

What is the forecast for New Year’s weekend?

New Year’s Eve looks to bring the best weather we’ve got left in 2022! The rainy weather system from Thursday and Friday will clear out Friday night to bring back sunshine for Saturday. Lows will be in the 50s with highs in the 70s. We expect a dry start to the New Year at the stroke of midnight with temperatures in the upper 50s. While New Year’s Day may start fairly clear, the clouds will be pushing back in as the day progresses. These clouds will be associated with an approaching Pacific storm system that should bring back widespread showers and thunderstorms for Monday, January 2nd.
