Dallas near top of U.S. cities ‘best prepared for a smarter future,’ study says

Texas isn’t dumb after all — at least when it comes to its digital infrastructure.

That’s according to a study from a real estate technology compan, ProptechOS, that evaluated major cities in the U.S. and Europe to determine which ones are “best prepared for a smarter future.

Dallas ranked as the seventh-best U.S. city that is most prepared for an evolving digital landscape. Austin, which was the only other Texas city to appear on the list, landed as No. 1.

Across the world, new and advanced technologies are being developed faster than ever before, with rising growth in artificial intelligence and other connected devices, the Swedish tech company wrote on its website.

“But new technologies can only support us as much as the infrastructure and environment around us are built to facilitate it,” the report reads.

To come up with the top-ten list, the study considered 100 cities from the U.S. and Europe and examined 11 specific metrics that fell into three categories: tech infrastructure and connectivity, including Wi-Fi and 5G networks availability; a tech-driven job market, or the number of tech jobs; and green infrastructure, such as electric vehicle sustainability.

Austin received the highest score of 75.4 out of 100 for its outstanding technology infrastructure and green infrastructure. The city is home to the eighth highest number of public-access electric vehicle charging stations, according to ProptechOS.

By comparison, Dallas also ranked high in the technology infrastructure category at 81 points, which includes the presence of free Wi-Fi, availability of airports and the speed of broadband downloads.

Both Texas cities received less than 50 points in the tech job market bucket, which analyzed the number of tech jobs per 10,000 of the population. No U.S. city on the top ten list received a score higher than 60 in this category.

The study also collated data from major European cities to determine which are best prepared for a ‘smart city’ future. On this list, London ranked No. 1, scoring considerably high in its connectivity infrastructure and green infrastructure categories.

The capital of England also bested cities across Europe and the U.S. for its green infrastructure, with around 2,600 public-access EV charges and nearly 5,000 green-certified buildings, according to the study.

What were the ‘smartest’ cities in the U.S.?

Here are the 10 smartest cities in the U.S., along with their overall score:
