Roads to close for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade. Here’s what else is closed Monday

You can expect to see road closures in South Dallas and some city services temporarily shut down on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The city’s parade for the holiday, co-hosted by nonprofit H.E.L.P., is being held this Monday, Jan. 16, and will result in one significant road closure, said organizer Clinton Baker.

City officials will close the one-mile stretch of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, where the parade is taking place, starting at 7 a.m. until around 2 p.m. The closed east-west roadway spans from Botham Jean Boulevard near Oak Cliff to Robert B Cullum Boulevard near Fair Park.

In addition, every street intersecting with MLK Boulevard will also be shut down during this time, including Holmes Street, Colonial Avenue, Atlanta Street and Malcolm X Boulevard.

The parade, expected to attract around 150,000 to 200,000 people, will start at 10 a.m. at Holmes Street. And this year’s celebration marks the parade’s return to Dallas since 2020, Baker said.

He added that the Dallas parade is one of the largest MLK Day celebrations in the country, and will feature bands, church groups and colorful floats.

What else will be closed?
Public facilities and departments will shut down on Monday to observe the holiday, according to the city’s schedule.

City libraries, recreation centers and municipal courts will be closed to the public Monday. Other closed facilities include Dallas Water Utilities administrative offices and city sanitation offices. If you’re dealing with an emergency water situation, the city says customers should call 311.
