DPS trooper underwent several surgeries after being struck by vehicle in Navarro County

A state trooper that was struck and seriously injured by a vehicle on Interstate 45 in Navarro County three days prior underwent multiple surgeries on his legs, hips and arms and remains in a hospital Friday, authorities said.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday, Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Curtis Putz was struck by a vehicle and seriously inured while investigating a crash near mile marker 220, the agency said.

It took about 90 minutes to get Putz to a hospital, DPS Director Col. Steven McCraw said in a Tuesday press conference in Austin.

At the press conference, McCraw said a person was driving “too fast for the conditions, lost control of the vehicle and ran into our trooper.”

The collision was one of several incidents in the North Texas area in a week where cold weather, freezing rain and sleet coated roads with ice.

Putz was sent to a Dallas-area hospital after the collision. DPS said he is alert, breathing independently and speaking with his family.

“Trooper Putz’s condition continues to improve daily, however he faces a long recovery ahead,” DPS said in a statement. “We ask for your continued thoughts and prayers for him and his family.”
