Magnitude-4.7 quake in West Texas felt in D-FW area, U.S. Geological Survey says

Multiple people in North Texas on Thursday reported feeling an earthquake that occurred hundreds of miles west of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

About 4:30 a.m., the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 4.7-magnitude quake near Hermleigh, more than 240 miles west of Dallas. The tremor was initially reported as a 4.3-magnitude quake.

The federal agency’s map of areas where residents reported feeling the quake included several North Texas cities, including Dallas, Irving and Mesquite.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage.

Earthquakes of similar strength were reported in West Texas late last year, including a magnitude-5.4 tremor near Midland.
