Lake Highlands High School student identified as victim in fatal shooting

The victim of a Lake Highlands fatal shooting was identified Wednesday by school officials as a local high school student.

In a message to students and parents, Lake Highlands High School Principal Kerri Jones said Dadrien Harrison was killed Tuesday in the shooting at the 7300 block of Skillman Street. The shooting was less than a mile away from the high school.

Harrison was a junior at the Lake Highlands high, Jones said.

“Dadrien’s passing is tragic and senseless, and he will be missed,” she wrote.

Dallas police officers were dispatched shortly after 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and found Harrison, who had been shot. Police, who have not identified Harrison, said he was transported to a hospital where he later died.

No arrest has been made in the shooting. Police said an “unknown suspect” shot Harrison and left the area. They have not released any details related to the suspect as of Wednesday evening.

Jones said the school used metal detectors Wednesday morning as “a precaution for all students entering the school.” She added the school plans to use metal detectors for the remainder of the week.

Because the metal detectors resulted in some long lines, she said school entrances will open earlier beginning at 8:15 a.m., and more staff will be added to manage the process. She encouraged students to arrive earlier and think about what items they’re bringing to school and avoid ones that will trigger a metal detector.

A Richardson ISD crisis counseling team was also at Lake Highlands High School on Wednesday and will be there for the rest of the week, Jones said, to talk with students and support those who knew Harrison.

She asked anyone who would like to share condolences or a memory of Harrison with his loved ones to email condolences@g.risd.org and the RISD counseling staff will pass those messages to his family.

“Thank you for keeping Dadrien’s loved ones in your thoughts during this family tragedy,” Jones said.
