Victim of drive-by shooting in east Oak cliff fires back, strikes suspect, police say

A man is in critical condition after he was shot by a someone whose home in east Oak Cliff was targeted in a drive-by shooting, police said.

Shortly before 6 a.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to a shooting in the 2400 block of Maryland Avenue, according to Dallas police. Officers found a gunshot victim in the area and that person was taken to a hospital. As of Sunday afternoon, the man, whose name police have not shared, was in critical condition.

Investigators believe the man fired at a house in the area from his vehicle, police said, then the resident of that home then returned fire, striking the man.

Police did not say whether the man who had been injured by gunfire was someone was known to authorities. They declined to comment on what evidence led them to believe the man who was hospitalized shot at the house or if a gun was recovered.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Preliminary information: On March 5, 2023 at about 5:47 AM officers responded to a shooting call in the 2400 block of Maryland Avenue. Per the call sheet, a male suspect in a vehicle shot at the victim’s house. The victim returned fire hitting the suspect. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and remains in critical condition. This is an ongoing investigation that will be documented under case number 037728–2023.
