Shooting in North Dallas leaves 11-year-old boy dead, woman wounded, authorities say

An 11-year-old boy was fatally shot and a woman was wounded early Saturday in North Dallas, police said, and a man was in custody in connection with the shooting.

Officers were called to the 6400 block of Royal Lane, between Preston and Hillcrest roads, about 2:15 a.m. and discovered that a boy and a woman had been shot.

The boy died at the scene, according to authorities, and the woman was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.

The Dallas County medical examiner’s office identified the 11-year-old boy as Jeremiah Green.

Police said 30-year-old Jakeith Huntley was arrested on a charge of capital murder in the slaying. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail, and his bail had not been set Saturday afternoon. It was not clear whether he had an attorney.

Authorities did not say how they linked Huntley to the shooting, but relatives of the victims said the gunman was the ex-boyfriend of the woman who was shot.

Family and friends gathered Saturday morning outside a home on Royal Lane.

Lisa Scott, who identified herself as Jeremiah Green’s grandmother, said her daughter Jocelyn Green, 31, was hospitalized. The family was waiting to hear whether she would need surgery.

Scott said her daughter and grandson lived in the home with her. Through tears, she described Jeremiah Green as a gifted, intelligent child. He was a gamer, she said, and loved playing on his Xbox and playing soccer.

“He was a good kid,” she said.

Court records show Huntley faces an aggravated assault charge in Denton County stemming from an incident that took place in May 2021. Details about that case were not immediately available.

In 2010, Huntley was sentenced to four years in prison for an aggravated assault in McLennan County. He was arrested in 2016 in Denton County on a family-violence assault charge, but the case was later dismissed, according to court records.
