Freeze warning in effect for Dallas-Fort Worth on Sunday morning

A freeze warning is in effect Sunday morning for North Texas, with temperatures expected to be in the upper 20s to mid-30s.

The National Weather Service said the warning is in effect from 3 to 9 a.m. and that conditions will be closer to what’s normal in January or February than a typical March morning. Temperatures in Dallas-Fort Worth are expected to hover around 31 degrees, according to the weather service.

cold front that brought storms to North Texas on Thursday also brought chilly air, lowering temperatures across the region.

Typically, the weather service issues a freeze watch when there’s potential for freezing temperatures in the next 24 to 36 hours, and it issues a freeze warning when temperatures are forecast to drop below 32 degrees for a long period of time.

If temperatures are expected to drop below 28 degrees for an extended period, the weather service issues a hard freeze warning.

The weather services advises people to protect the four P’s during a freeze: people, pets, pipes and plants. Leaving pets outside can be dangerous, and sensitive plants should also be brought indoors if possible. The weather service also encourages people to cover exposed outdoor pipes to prevent them from freezing, as they can burst.

Temperatures in North Texas are expected to remain colder than usual through Monday before a warming trend begins and highs reach the upper 70s by Wednesday. A chance of thunderstorms is in the forecast for Thursday.
