Officer fatally shoots man while responding to burglary call in DeSoto, police say

An officer fatally shot a man Monday morning while responding to a burglary call in DeSoto, police said.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., someone who lives in the 300 block of Polk Street called 911 and said an unknown man “brandishing an unknown item” was burglarizing their home.

The man accused of the burglary, whom police have identified as Michael Christopher Nunez, 47, was outside the 911 caller’s home when police arrived. Nunez was armed, according to police.

Nunez “advanced toward” an officer, who then shot him, police said. He died at the scene, according to police.

The officer who fired the weapon was placed on paid administrative leave, per department policy, the DeSoto Police Department said in a Monday news release.

Lt. Chris Huerta, a spokesman for DeSoto police, said at least 10 officers responded to the burglary call.

Huerta said he “cannot elaborate any further on how the suspect was armed,” adding that police are investigating what led to the shooting.

Nunez had no relation to the person who made the 911 call, Huerta said.

Grand Prairie Police Deparmtent is conducting the investigation into the officer’s actions, the release stated. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Division has been notified of the shooting.
