Severe weather stays north of Houston Friday, but here’s why Sunday could be a different story

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Friday is shaping up to be windy and humid as a powerful storm system just misses us to the north, but we may get a round of thunderstorms with severe potential on Sunday.

Winds will increase through the day on Friday in response to a strong area of low pressure blowing into the Plains. This weather system will lead to a severe weather outbreak over the Midwest, but all the severe weather should stay well north of Houston. Temperatures locally will start off mild in the low 70s and warm into the mid 80s during the afternoon. Extensive clouds and isolated showers will greet you out the door in the morning, but the sunshine comes back in the afternoon as rain chances drop below 20%. Early in the evening, strong thunderstorms could blow into our northern counties.

What can we expect in Houston for Final Four weekend?

A front blowing in Friday night will bring a drop in the humidity and temperatures for Saturday morning. Lows will be in the upper 50s to low 60s. Highs will still manage to climb into the 80s. The front will quickly push back inland as a warm front, which means more humidity returning Saturday night and Sunday. The warm front not only brings a higher chance for scattered thunderstorms Sunday afternoon, it also could bring severe weather because of the twisting winds along the front. Briefly heavy rain, hail, gusty winds, and a tornado are possible in the strongest storms. Temperatures will warm from the 60s in the morning to near in the afternoon.

What’s the early outlook for Easter week?

It will get rather warm Monday and Tuesday behind the warm front. Highs will pop into the upper 80s both days. A cold front will blow in Wednesday with a chance for rain, and that front is expected to stall out nearby all the way into Easter weekend. If that holds true, then there will be daily chances for showers and thunderstorms Thursday through Easter Sunday.
