Arlington firefighters free girl stuck in storm drain outside Swift Elementary School

Arlington firefighters freed a girl who was stuck in a storm drain Friday afternoon outside her elementary school.

The Swift Elementary School student fell into the drain about 3:30 p.m., an Arlington ISD spokeswoman said.

Crews freed the child after she had been stuck for more than an hour. Firefighters said the girl was taken to a hospital to be examined but did not appear to be seriously injured, according to KXAS-TV (NBC5).

The child had taken her grandmother’s apron to show others during career day at the school, NBC5 reported, but the wind blew the apron into the drain. When the girl reached for the apron, she got stuck.

“The whole time she was in the storm drain, we had our crews down there and she was able to talk to us and respond,” Jeff Durand with the Arlington Fire Department told the station. “When we got her unstuck, she was able to kind of get off the ground on her own power.”
