Tarrant County inmate faces murder charge after assaulting hospital employee, police say

A Tarrant County inmate faces a murder charge after she allegedly punched a pregnant hospital worker in the stomach last week.

Cheri Akil, 39, was being treated at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth on Wednesday when the incident occurred, according to the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Akil, who was restrained in a hospital bed, punched a pregnant staff member in the stomach while she was standing nearby.

The staff member immediately sought treatment and an ultrasound that “determined that the unborn child no longer had a pulse,” according to police.

Akil remained in the hospital as of Monday afternoon. She will be booked into Tarrant County Jail once she is released, police said.

County court records show Akil was sentenced to jailtime earlier this month for driving while intoxicated and intent to operate a game room violation stemming from a 2020 arrest. She was previously charged with assaulting a family member in 2019, records show.
