We’ll catch a needed break in rain before storm chances climb Mother’s Day weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — There is no longer a threat for widespread street flooding, but a stray shower is still possible Thursday.

A solid 1-3″ of rain fell across most of Houston Wednesday morning, bringing two day rainfall totals to over 5″ in some Houston neighborhoods.

What can we expect Thursday and Friday?

By Thursday, the upper low that brought our recent rains should be far enough away to bring rain chances down to 20%, but any thunderstorm that pops up could bring briefly heavy rain. The rain chance remains low on Friday ahead of another stormy weather system that moves through the state on Mother’s Day weekend.

How high are rain chances for Mother’s Day weekend?

At this time we have rain chances for Saturday and Sunday both at 60%. A large rainmaker will set up over the western half of the state for the weekend, putting the highest rainfall accumulations likely somewhere in the vicinity of San Antonio. We will be on the edge of this rainy weather system, which will send rounds of thunderstorms through Southeast Texas both days this weekend. Be careful if your travel plans take you west anywhere from the Hill County to South Texas as flash flooding will be more likely in those parts of the state.
