Man lost in Brays Bayou after trying to help 2 children in the water, Houston police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Swift water and multiple suction points along Brays Bayou are challenging crews trying to look for a man who was trying to help two children who fell in.

The Houston Police Department confirmed crews began searching for the would-be rescuer early Wednesday evening in a portion of the bayou near Highway 288 and South MacGregor Way.

Preliminary information from police states a group of people was at the bridge near Almeda and MacGregor when two 12-year-olds got too close, fell in, and needed help.

Two adults went to help and got the kids out, HPD Lt. Larry Crowson said. One adult got out, but a man, believed to be 22 years old, failed to make it to safety.

A Houston police helicopter was launched to search the bayou to the ship channel area. Officers and firefighters also looked at other points along the bayou, and a dive team made it out, though, police said divers weren’t likely to go in Wednesday night.

Crews went on to temporarily suspend the search until Thursday morning.
