Flash Flood Watch now includes Harris County, stormy Mother’s Day on the way

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It’s not what we were hoping for to celebrate Mother’s Day, as another very active day is in store for Southeast Texas.

The biggest change overnight is that our Flash Flood Watch, which previously only included our western-most counties, has been expanded east and now includes most of Southeast Texas (Harris Co, Montgomery Co, and Galveston Co all included in that). The Flash Flood Watch is set to expire at 7pm, as rain tapers off this evening.

When and where will the rain fall today?

Rain and thunderstorms will be an issue off and on for most of the day, and we won’t really dry out until this evening. Scattered thunderstorms are pushing up from the Gulf this morning, and we’ll likely see a resurgence of showers and storms this afternoon as well. The highest rainfall totals will be from the I-45 corridor to the west, but area-wide we need to be ready for the rain. For much of the area any outdoor Mother’s Day plans will likely need to be moved inside, or at the very least will need a contingency plan for when a band of rain moves in. Localized flooding and ponding on the roadways is the biggest concern today, please be safe as we celebrate mom.

Will this rainy weather pattern continue next week?

As the rain tapers off tonight, things look to quiet down a bit next week. There’s still enough moisture around for a few storms, but the overall coverage will be much lower than what we’ve been dealing with all weekend.
