82-year-old gas station owner killed in Terrell, suspect in custody

Terrell police say the 82-year-old owner of a gas station was fatally shot Friday night near his store.

A shooting was reported just before 11 p.m. at Mom & Pops in the 400 block of Virginia Street, police said. They identified the victim as Fahed “Pops” Fatayri.

Officers already nearby heard the gunshots and were searching the area before the call came in, police said. They located 20-year-old Jamarco Ja Keith Blanton running south from the store and detained him, and found his jacket and gun nearby, police said.

Police determined Blanton, a Dallas resident, was a suspect in the slaying using the store’s video surveillance and witness statements, and they arrested him on a charge of capital murder.

It was unclear whether Blanton’s bail had been set or whether he has an attorney.

Police said in a statement that Fatayri was “a beloved and longstanding member of the Terrell community” and offered their prayers to his family and friends.
