Here are when and where the highest chance of rain occurs this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A weak front blows in to Houston this weekend, and it brings along with it a small chance for thunderstorms Saturday and showers on Sunday.

Thunderstorms forming over the Hill County will make a run for Southeast Texas Saturday morning, and while they should fizzle on their approach to Houston, a few rumbles of thunder are possible northwest of Houston along HWY 290 from Waller to Brenham. Some rain showers could make it into Houston, otherwise we will wait until the afternoon hours for the next opportunity for rain.

Once sunshine breaks through the clouds temperatures will make another run for 90 degrees, and like the last few days ozone pollution could be a problem in some Houston-area neighborhoods from the late afternoon to the early evening. As the weak front pushes toward the coast late in the day, a few strong thunderstorms could pop up.

Sunday morning we will be watching the sky to our southwest for a disturbance that could bring widespread showers to communities near Matagorda Bay. That disturbance will track across our coastal counties to bring higher rain chances south of Houston. Showers are still possible in Houston, but it’s a low chance at 30%. Extensive clouds should keep high temperatures in the upper 70s and lower 80s for most in Southeast Texas. The good news is we are not expecting a washout like what occurred last weekend on Mother’s Day.

Could any of the storms this weekend turn severe?

It’s possible one or two storms developing Saturday could turn severe, but the chances for severe weather are low. That said, there will be enough storm fuel in the atmosphere to generate small hail, gusty winds over 40 mph, frequent lightning, and a quick inch or two of rain. Remember, it only takes 2″ of rain in one hour to generate street flooding in most of our neighborhoods.

What’s the weather outlook for next week?

With the weak front finally pushing some drier air in late Sunday, we should enjoy sunshine and slightly cooler mornings going back to work and school Monday and Tuesday. By Wednesday and Thursday storm chances are back. Temperatures will be seasonal throughout the week with lows in the upper 60s and highs in the upper 80s.
