Security guard dies, suspect flees after shooting near Preston Center West, police say

A suspect allegedly breaking into a vehicle near University Park fatally shot a security guard who confronted him before driving away Friday afternoon, Dallas police say.

The city of University Park reported a heavy police presence at Preston Center West, near Westchester Drive and Luther Lane, and cautioned residents to avoid the area. The city said the suspect fled in a gold Toyota Camry.

Dallas police are investigating the incident since it occurred just blocks away from University Park limits, said director of city communications Steve Mace.

Dallas police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman confirmed police responded to the 8200 block of Westchester about 3:25 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found a man shot at the location and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Police later said the man — whom they did not identify — died at the hospital.

An investigation found that the man, who was a security guard, confronted a suspect who was breaking into a car. A fight broke out and the suspect shot the security guard before fleeing in a gold sedan, according to Dallas police.
