North Texas metro areas lead nation in population growth

North Texas had the fastest-growing metro area in the United States from July 2021 to July 2022, with an annual growth of more than 170,000 people, new Census Bureau data shows.

Texas cities led the nation in growth both by total number of people and the percentage change, according to Census population and housing estimates released Thursday.

North Texas was followed by the Houston metro area, which added over 124,000 residents in the same period. North Texas remains the fourth-most populous metro area in the nation, with more than 7.9 million people, behind New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

Fort Worth gained the most residents in the nation, with about 19,000 people while Dallas added over 8,800 residents in the same time period.

“Fort Worth in some ways used to be kind of a satellite city of Dallas and now is really a powerhouse in terms of population growth,” said State Demographer Lloyd Potter.

Fort Worth’s growth is impacting surrounding areas in Parker and Jonhson counties, he said.

Denton and Frisco also reported significant growth. Frisco ranked 15th for population increase, with more than 8,500 new residents.

In Dallas County, Glenn Heights, Wilmer, Combine and Sachse grew by 4 to 5 percent.

Garland, Lancaster, Duncanville and Cedar Hill shrank by 0.5 to 1 percent.

Thursday’s release of Census data followed a report in March about county population trends. Texas grew by more than 470,000 people from July 2021 to July 2022, with Dallas County gaining nearly 13,000 people, or 0.5 percent. Surrounding counties increased by 3 to 8 percent.
