Strong storms and ozone to impact southeast Texas Sunday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Saturday has remained sunny and dry, but a couple of showers and a storm or two can’t be ruled out until late Saturday evening. Don’t be surprised if you hear some loud thunder or receive gusty winds and heavy rain Saturday night. The better chance for showers and storms returns for Sunday, though, a few of which could be strong to severe.

Sunday will start of dry with morning low temperatures near 70 degrees and rise into the mid-upper 80s for highs. By lunchtime, a few showers could be around, with more developing into the early afternoon. Some showers could grow, intensify and bring thunder, lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds. The best chance for that will be in the early evening. Minor street flooding could impact getting around town Sunday evening, where the best chance for that will be along the coast.

Sunday is also an Ozone Action Day.

What can we expect Sunday?

Sunday, the weather pattern turns even stormier. An upper-level low will set up shop over central Texas, spinning thunderstorms our way during the afternoon and evening. One or two of those storms could even turn severe with gusty downburst winds over 60 mph, up to quarter-size hail, frequent lightning, and a quick inch or two of rain that could flood some streets.

How long will this rainy weather pattern stick around?

We are keeping rain chances at 60-70% Sunday through Tuesday as the low stays parked to our west. By Wednesday it begins to push eastward, so rain chances should slide down to 20% by Friday.

Now that it’s hurricane season, is anything happening in the tropics?

Yes! Tropical Storm Arlene is spinning over the eastern Gulf. You can get more info about Arlene and what else is happening in the tropics by visiting our daily Tropical Update page.
