Smoky haze expected Thursday as Heat Advisory continues

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A smoky haze snuck into Southeast Texas Wednesday, and that smoke from Mexico is expected to thicken up overnight. Air Quality will likely stay in the moderate range, meaning it should be nowhere near as bad as the Canadian wildfire smoke that impacted the northeastern United States last week.

The plus side to the smoke? It helps keep the temperatures a degree or two lower than originally predicted. That said, we’re still expecting Houston to warm from near 80 in the morning to around 97 in the afternoon. Factor in the humidity, and it will feel more like 105-110 degrees in Southeast Texas, and that’s why another Heat Advisory is in effect from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.

How hot will Houston get during this heat wave?

Afternoon high temperatures will reach into the mid to upper 90s every day through Father’s Day weekend…and likely beyond. Heat index values will likely peak Saturday around 111-degrees. A heat index of 108 is enough to trigger a Heat Advisory. If the heat index reaches 113, then an Excessive Heat Warning will be issued. Studies show that when a big heat wave occurs early in the summer months it is harder on our bodies because we yet had time to adjust to the hot summer season. Make sure you stay well hydrated and take plenty of breaks if working our exercising outside. We may eventually see the temperatures hit 100 in Houston early next week, but by then the moisture levels will be low enough to keep the heat index just below 108.

When could we get some rain and heat relief?

We are seeing signs that perhaps by the end of next week the heat ridge will push westward and far enough away to bring temperatures down a few degrees and open the door for some isolated afternoon downpours.

What is happening in the tropics?

Nothing is threatening to develop at this time, but we are tracking a Saharan dust cloud. You can read/watch more about it on our Tropical Update page.
