Excessive Heat Warning today, feels-like temps could reach over 112 degrees

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Thursday delivered Houston’s hottest reading so far this summer with an air temperature of 98 and a peak heat index of 110 at Bush Airport. Today is likely to be a degree or two hotter, and when you factor in the humidity, the heat index could exceed 112.

That’s why an Excessive Heat Warning is now in effect for Friday and Saturday. This is issued when the heat index is expected to reach 113 or hotter. We know it always gets hot in Houston every summer, but this is extreme even for our standards, so please take all necessary precautions to protect yourself from heat illness. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks when working outside, wear light colored clothing, and protect yourself from the sun.

When could we get some rain and heat relief?

We are seeing more evidence that the heat ridge will push westward the second half of next week to bring temperatures down a few degrees and open the door for some isolated afternoon downpours. Heat indices will drop down closer to 105 as air temperatures drop down toward 97.

What is happening in the tropics?

We are tracking a tropical wave emerging from Africa that has a small chance to develop in the deep tropics over the next week. You can read/watch more about it on our Tropical Update page.
