Excessive Heat Warning continues but help is on the way to Houston!

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston officially caught a fever Monday afternoon by hitting 100 at Bush Airport for the first time this year. We expect this will happen again Tuesday afternoon, and the Excessive Heat Warning has been extended through Tuesday at 8 p.m. Heat index values will range between 105 to 115 during the afternoon hours.

An Excessive Heat Warning is issued when the heat index is expected to reach 113 or hotter. We know it always gets hot in Houston every summer, but this is extreme even for our standards, so please take all necessary precautions to protect yourself from heat illness. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks when working outside, wear light colored clothing, and protect yourself from the sun.

The pattern is beginning to change, and that will lead to a 20% chance of a shower or thunderstorms north of Houston late Tuesday.

When could we get some rain and heat relief?

The heat ridge is migrating west of Texas, and this will allow disturbances to rotate into southeast Texas Wednesday and Thursday. This will bring a chance for some strong thunderstorms and lower afternoon high temperatures. Heat index values will fall down closer to 105, with air temps dropping into the mid 90s. It won’t be cool by any means, but the relief should be noticeable for a few days.

How does the weekend look?

Over the weekend, the mercury starts to climb again as the heat ridge begins moving back toward Texas. It should be a dry weekend with highs in the upper 90s and heat indices near 110. The heat ridge will continue building back over Texas next week, which should bring us more triple-digit days.

What is happening in the tropics?

Tropical Storm Bret has formed in the central Atlantic. It’s unusual for storms to form here this early in the season, and you can find out more about what that means for the months ahead on our Tropical Update page.
