Higher rain chances for Wednesday & Thursday, street flooding possible

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Tropical moisture is moving into Houston, so that will up the rain chances even higher for Wednesday and Thursday.

The radar should stay fairly quiet through sunrise, but it won’t take long for showers and thunderstorms to blossom. Initially the rain will begin offshore and near our coastal communities, then it will transition inland toward Houston mid-morning. Shower and thunderstorms chances should peak in Houston between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. Lightning will be the biggest concern with any storm that pops up, and it’s also possible that a quick inch or two of rain could temporarily flood some residential streets and feeder roads. Because of the early onset of rain, high temperatures will again peak in the low 90s, and we’ll spend most of the afternoon rain-cooled in the 80s.

A similar pattern will be in place for Thursday too, where some locations that pick up the heaviest showers both days could end up with 3 to 4 inches of rain.

What’s the weekend look like?

After this rainy stretch midweek (which we need), the main story will be the return of some hot temperatures. Highs will be back in the upper 90s for Saturday and Sunday with an isolated shower or storm possible each day. These weekend rain chances are only 20% though.

Is the heat ridge coming back?

Yes… By the weekend, temperatures will already push back into the middle and upper 90s as the moisture moves out and the heat ridge settles back in over Texas. Temperatures will push into the upper 90s and may even touch 100 across most of Southeast Texas most days next week. There will still be enough moisture around for a stray shower each day, but the rain chances will be 20% or less for most.

What are you monitoring in the tropics right now?

Our main focus is on the tropical moisture over the Gulf blowing this way. Thankfully, high wind shear should prevent any tropical development. For a full overview of what’s happening in the tropics, head to our Tropical Update page.
