Bus that crashed in Mexico, killing 8, was carrying at least 32 people from North Texas

At least 32 people traveling from North Texas were in a bus crash that left eight dead Monday in Zacatecas state, Mexico, authorities said Wednesday.

More than 30 people were injured when their bus overturned on Federal Highway 54 between Zacatecas and Saltillo in northern Mexico. At least three children were among the dead, the newspaper El Sol de Zacatecas reported.

Among the 41 passengers were at least 19 people traveling from Fort Worth and 13 from Irving. They were headed to destinations such as Jalisco, Aguascalientes and Zacatecas, according to a passenger list provided by the government of Zacatecas. The names of those who died had not yet been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Mexico City’s Reforma newspaper said that according to initial reports, the bus rolled over while traveling at high speeds on wet pavement due to rain.

Videos shared online show passengers asking for help while trying to leave the bus during the rain.

The bus, operated by Irving-based Zavala Plus LLC, overturned at 6:19 a.m. in the Ciénaga de Rocamontes community of the Concepción del Oro municipality, about 750 miles from Dallas, the Zacatecas Ministry of Health reported.

Officials said 15 passengers were taken to area hospitals. Mexican authorities said that three children were hospitalized and that one of them, Brayan Valdiva of Fort Worth, was “in a very serious condition.”

The bus driver, a 45-year-old man, was in the most severe condition, with chest trauma and a hip fracture, authorities said.

Zavala Plus LCC provides bus rides to more than five states in Mexico. It didn’t respond to emails or phone calls.

The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has flagged Zavala Plus in the past for speeding and for 21 maintenance vehicle violations.
