Community events in Pleasant Grove this month

Pleasant Grove, in the heart of southeast Dallas, hosts several events for the community all year long — many of which are free of charge. You can check out the latest offerings for the summer here:

Pleasant Grove Community Market

From the same organizers of Taste of Pleasant Grove, the Pleasant Grove Community Market has the purpose to support local businesses in Southeast Dallas.

During this event, there will be free or low-cost health screenings, vaccines available for kids, school supplies, shoe drive collection and more.

GED Classes At The Library

The Dallas Public Library offers in-person free classes open to anyone who would like to prepare for the GED tests.

Swan Strings Summer Program

Swan Strings Music provides free music education, community concerts and sound therapy services to North Texas individuals without access. Classes are limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Founding Director, Jess Garland, a Dallas-based singer-songwriter, recording, and performing artist is a multi-instrumentalist who combines harp and guitar loops to evoke her unique brand of celestial avant-garde pop with ethereal jazz tones.

Classes are Wednesday, July 12, Aug. 2, and Aug. 9, from 4 to 6:30 p.m.; and Thursday, Aug. 10, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Branch Library, 7310 Lake June Rd, Dallas.

Community Pantry Day

Dallas College’s food pantries are open to students all the time, but on most Fridays, anyone can stop by and pick up needed groceries — free of charge. Supplies range from snacks and meals to diapers. Community members may also shop in the clothing closets on Community Pantry Days. Take home up to five free clothing items a month.

Friday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dallas College Pleasant Grove Center (formerly known as Eastfield College), 802 Buckner Blvd, Dallas.

Jiu-Jitsu Classes

Martial arts all have similar objectives: to physically defeat other persons or defend oneself or others from physical threats.

Youth Basketball Camp

Improve your basketball skills in this instructional course for players of all skill levels. Participants will receive individual attention as well as group work in the fundamental areas of basketball, including technique, dribbling, ball handling, passing, sportsmanship and more.

Active Senior Adult Program

The Adult Day Program is designed to enhance the transition of adults with disabilities through the rehabilitation process and into the community. The Adult Day Program provides a place for adults 18 years of age and older a chance to work on and increase social interaction, motor skills, daily living skills, independence, self-confidence and community integration skills through various recreation opportunities.

Preschool Open Play

This interactive program allows children at a young age to begin to develop to their full potential. Preschoolers have the opportunity to meet new friends while experiencing a variety of physical activities, including sports, games and more.

Zumba

Zumba mixes workout and party. The classes fuse hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program.
