Storm chances continue into Sunday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Temperatures reached the triple digits across much of southeast Texas Saturday. And as the sun sets, a couple of showers and storms could develop. These are associated with a stationary front that will slowly push from north of south across the region. Best chance for rain will be north and east of Houston through Midnight. A couple of storms could intensify close to severe caliber with strong winds gusts, heavy rain and small hail as potential threats. Not to mention lots of lightning.

Conditions will dry out overnight though with temperatures falling to near 80 degrees in the morning. That front will linger over the region Sunday too, giving Houston another small rain chance. The highest chance for rain will be north of I-10 and east of I-45 later in the afternoon and evening. Otherwise, the Heat Advisory continues into Sunday with afternoon heat index values reaching upwards of 110.

What are the rain chances for Sunday?

We’ve set rain chances at 30% for Sunday, too, but it really depends on how the weather unfolds on Saturday. If we do get a broken band of thunderstorms late Saturday, they might push all the moisture offshore and rob Sunday of any opportunity for rain. If we do not see much storm development Saturday, then we’re still on for a chance of thunderstorms Sunday.

Will rain chances continue to next work week?

We no longer expect much of a rain chance after the weekend. There will still be small opportunities here and there with the heat ridge staying just far enough away, but they don’t look to climb above 20% odds at this time.

What are you monitoring in the tropics right now?

We are tracking a thick plume of Saharan dust that is likely to impact us starting Tuesday, and we are also tracking a tropical wave in the central Atlantic with a high (60%) chance for development as it moves toward the Caribbean.
