Here’s why it could be a long time before heat relief arrives

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We are in the middle of what is expected to be Houston’s most intense heat wave since the brutal August of 2011.

The heat ridge that brought record-breaking heat to the Desert Southwest is now settling in over Houston, and it looks like it won’t really budge all week long.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for all of southeast Texas until at least 9 p.m. Wednesday, which means heat index levels could exceed 108.

There is also an Excessive Heat Warning in effect for Washington, Brazos, Grimes, Walker, Trinity, San Jacinto, Montgomery, Liberty, & Polk Counties until at least 9 p.m. Wednesday. Communities here could experience actual temperatures of 105-degrees or hotter.

To make matters worse, temperatures will have a tough time cooling below 80-degrees at night during this heat wave. While some of you enjoyed a brief “steam shower” on Tuesday, the disturbance that created those showers is moving away from us on Wednesday. This will drop rain chances back near zero percent.

Is this going to be a repeat of August 2011 when it hit 100 or above on all but one day of the month?

While it’s difficult to predict more than 2 weeks out, we are seeing signs that the heat ridge will stay overhead or nearby for the first 3 weeks of August. Because of that, we are forecasting triple-digit-heat every day for the next 10 days. Hopefully something will change and we’ll get some rain and lower temperatures.

How are rain chances looking for this week?

Rain chances will remain close to zero through the weekend and all of next week. We are seeing signs that around the middle of the month the heat ridge might back away just enough to allow some deeper moisture and a glimmer of hope for rain.

What are you monitoring in the tropics right now?

We’re monitoring one tropical wave over the central Atlantic, which has a low chance for development over the next 7 days. For a full overview of what’s happening in the tropics, head to our Tropical Update page.
