Our streak of 100-degree continues, but there’s at least a small chance for rain

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Our streak of days with temperatures over 100 degrees has now reached 14 straight, and it looks like we’ve got more to come. this heat wave will approach the standing record for most consecutive 100-degree days in a row which stands at 24.

Keep in mind that with the hot weather and dry ground, there is an elevated risk of fire weather. Burn bans are now in effect for all of southeast Texas. Drought conditions have also gotten worse across southeast Texas, with every single county now experiencing some kind of moderate to severe drought.

The extreme heat rolls on into Monday with morning lows stating in the low 80s and afternoon highs in the triple digits for most. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect until 9 p.m. Monday for almost all of southeast Texas. A Heat Advisory instead closer to the Matagorda Bay.

Is this going to be a repeat of August 2011, when it hit 100 or above on all but one day of the month?

With a brand new week beginning and the 100-degree stretch continuing, this heat wave will come extremely close to the record one from August of 2011. So now it wouldn’t be a surprise if this month takes second to August of 2011 or even beats it in terms of the heat. Thankfully, drought conditions were not as bad heading into the month, but unfortunately with minimal rain in the extended forecast, drought conditions and fire danger will get worse.

What happened to Tuesday’s rain chance?

It’s still there, though only as a 20% chance now. And while that front wills till push through the region, it’s timing and strength is why we’re forecasting lower odds for rain. A few lucky spots closer to the coast could still pick up a brief shower though Tuesday afternoon.

What are you monitoring in the tropics right now?

It was only a matter of time before hurricane season came back to life. A broad area of low pressure could develop off the west coast of Africa. And with several clusters of storms moving off the coast over the next week, there is a 20% chance one or some of those could develop into a tropical system over the next 7 days. Mind you, those odds are still low and that region is far away from southeast Texas. For a full overview of what’s happening in the tropics, head to our Tropical Update page.
