Here’s where tropical downpours are most likely on Tuesday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We are expecting Tropical Storm Harold to make landfall in South Texas late Tuesday morning, and on that path the bulk of the beneficial rains will miss Southeast Texas. That said, there is still a chance you could get a passing shower, but it will do little combat this drought and heat wave.

Outer rain bands will impacts our coastal counties Tuesday morning, and those rain bands will need to be monitored for the possibility of brief tornadoes. Houston’s highest chance of rain peaks at only 30% in the afternoon hours, but there should be enough clouds and wind around to keep the high just shy of 100.

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for parts of Jackson and Matagorda Counties and will remain in effect through Tuesday. This includes towns like Palacios, Matagorda, and Sargent. Wind gusts are expected to stay below tropical storm force strength, between 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Flash flooding is not expected, and storm surge tides will be minimal, likely a foot or less.

How close are we getting to the August 2011 record of 24 consecutive triple-digit days?

As of Monday, the current 100 degree heat wave sits at 23 days. So this 100 degree heat wave will at least come in second place to the 24 day record set back in 2011. While Tuesday’s high temperature forecast is currently 99 degrees, if it happens to 100 that day, we’ll tie the long standing record and potentially break it by several days with 100 degree temperatures in the forecast through the end of August.

What else are you monitoring in the tropics right now?

The Atlantic is definitely starting to awaken. There are two other named storms and two tropical disturbances we are monitoring. For a full overview of what’s happening in the tropics, head to our Tropical Update page.
