Houston’s all-time record high predicted to fall Sunday, but help is on the way

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Take every heat precaution you can through this weekend because we are now predicting Houston’s temperatures will hit an all-time record high of 110 degrees on Sunday. The good news is we should see scattered thunderstorms pop up the very next day as a weak front blows into southeast Texas.

Sunday morning starts off dry and warm with low temperatures around 80. As a weak front pushes closer to southeast Texas, the wind will turn out of the north, blasting Houston with hot, dry air and pumping the high temperature up to 110.

If our forecast verifies, this would set a new all-time high-temperature record for the Bayou City. The current record is 109 which was most recently tied this past Thursday.

Speaking of that weak front, isolated showers and storms could develop ahead of and long the front Sunday evening and Monday as well. A few of these storms could strengthen and bring strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall.

Are there any more opportunities for rain in the forecast?

Yes! The storm front will continue to blow into southeast Texas on Monday as the heat ridge slides toward the west coast. This front will generate a chance for widely scattered downpours Monday afternoon and evening as temperatures again reach into the triple digits. By Tuesday afternoon, we should feel drier air behind the front, and that lower humidity will stick around for a few days with highs just below 100.

Does this mean we are done with the heat ridge starting next week?

While we do believe this weekend will be the climax of our brutal summer heat, the heat ridge is expected to settle back overhead sometime in September, but it will be a weaker version of its former self. Before the heat ridge returns, we see signs that an upper-level low may spin overhead on Labor Day weekend, which brings hope for some additional showers and thunderstorms.

I heard there is a tropical storm coming for the Gulf next week. Is that a concern for Texas?

There is a new low pressure system over the northwest Caribbean threatening to develop in the Gulf of Mexico, but for now it looks like more of a threat to Florida than to Texas. Franklin is also pinning toward Bermuda, and there are two more potential areas of development in the Atlantic.
