A chance for widely scattered downpours Tuesday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Another possibility for rain comes tomorrow as moisture continues to get pulled in from the Gulf. Tuesday morning should be mostly sunny with a very slight chance of rain. Rain chances go up slightly in the afternoon as the seabreeze starts to move inland. This should result in widely scattered showers and storms. Unfortunately coverage won’t be quite as high as what we saw Monday. High temps Tuesday should top out in the upper 90s with a few areas reaching 100.

How will this rain impact the drought?

Unfortunately, it really won’t have much of an impact at all. It will take at least 7″ of rain in one month to alleviate the drought, and it will take 13″ of rain in a month to completely wipe it out. While any downpour that pops up this week could drop a quick inch of rain, most that get rain will end up with less than half an inch.

Are we now done with the heat ridge as we head into September?

The heat ridge is expected to settle back in later this week, but it will be a weaker version of its former self. We will likely still have highs in the triple digits well into September, but we shouldn’t get anywhere near as hot as it got in August.

Are there any other tropical threats on the horizon for the Gulf of Mexico?

At this time there are no immediate threats to the Gulf of Mexico, but we are seeing some signs that a tropical system may try to spin up somewhere in the western Gulf between September 10th-15th. For a full overview of what’s happening in the tropics, head to our Tropical Update page.
