A rain-making front slowly brings up rain chances this week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A stalled front will bring us multiple opportunities for rain this week, but we’ll have to wait a few more days for the highest rain chances to arrive.

We hope you enjoyed the low humidity and pleasant temps Monday morning because they’re mostly gone by sunrise Tuesday. Instead of widespread temperatures in the 60s, most will wake up to temps in the low 70s Tuesday morning, which is near average for mid-September.

For the fourth day in a row, high temperatures will top out in the mid-to-upper 90s, which is an improvement from all the 100s we’ve endured since late July. At the time of peak heating, a slow-moving front will start pushing in from the north. This will be good enough along with the sea breeze, to trigger isolated downpours for the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Rain chances will climb a little higher Wednesday, and then a little more on Thursday and Friday.

What can we reasonably expect with this week’s front?

At this time, we expect the front to stall our nearby Wednesday and bring us a chance of showers and thunderstorms through Saturday. We currently have rain chances at 30% on Wednesday, 40% on Thursday and Friday, and 30% on Saturday. The extra clouds and rain-cooled air should cap highs in the low-to-mid 90s, and there’s an outside chance highs may peak in the 80s if the rain starts early enough in the day.

How much rain can we expect?

Totals will vary widely over Southeast Texas because each round of rain will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms. That means some of you may get very little rain while others get multiple rounds and inches of precipitation. Most of us that do get rain will end up with less than an inch.

Are there any other tropical threats on the horizon for the Gulf of Mexico?

At this time, there are no immediate threats to the Gulf of Mexico, and we expect wind shear to remain high over the Gulf for the next couple of weeks. We are monitoring category 3 Hurricane Lee in the Atlantic for impacts to the U.S. East Coast this week.
