Man in custody after hourslong search in Ellis County, authorities say

Authorities in Ellis County took a suspect into custody Friday evening after an hourslong search during which nearby residents were asked to stay inside and lock their doors.

About 1 p.m. Ellis County sheriff’s deputies learned that a tow truck hit a police officer’s patrol vehicle in Rice, about 40 miles southeast of Dallas, then continued north into Ellis County, the sheriff’s office said.

An Ellis County deputy spotted the tow truck about 10 minutes later and watched it run a stop sign, authorities said. The tow truck then struck the deputy’s vehicle — pushing it 38 feet and rendering it inoperable, according to the sheriff’s office — and the deputy fired his weapon.

Minutes later, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper saw the tow truck, which “made an evasive action” and rolled into a field. The driver got out and ran toward a wooded area, officials said.

Authorities searched for hours on the western side of Ennis, asking the public to avoid the area, and urging those living nearby to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

Officials found the man about 7:20 p.m. near Bardwell Lake, took him into custody and treated himfor injuries suffered in the crash. The man, identified as 24-year-old Lorenzo Marquez Jr., had not been shot, authorities said.

Authorities said Marquez was wanted on a probation violation in a Dallas County burglary case. He was continuing to receive medical care Saturday and faces a charge of aggravated assault against a public servant connected to the incident with the Ellis County deputy. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

The deputy who fired his weapon was not identified. He was placed on routine administrative leave.
