Severe weather in North Texas possible Wednesday as cold front arrives in the region

North Texas residents may see severe weather starting late Wednesday, but fall-like conditions are expected in the region as storms clear up, according to the National Weather Service.

Earlier this week, the National Weather Service in Fort Worth said widespread severe storm activity was not expected for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Storms now have the possibility of being severe, and heavy rain could affect Thursday morning commuters in the region, according to the weather service.

Juan Hernandez, a meteorologist for NWS Fort Worth, said the greatest chance for severe weather will be between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday. Wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are the main threats, Hernandez said.

Some parts of North Texas could see flooding, with increased water runoff because of dry ground conditions, he added. Dallas-Fort Worth is expected to get about 2 inches of rainfall, with heavier rain totals likely in parts east of the area, according to the NWS Fort Worth forecast.

The weather service expected temperatures in D-FW to be on a “gradual downward trend” after Tuesday, when rainfall was also possible in the region. The high for Wednesday is forecast to be in the upper 80s, according to the KXAS-TV (Channel 5) forecast.

Following this week’s storms, North Texans could see cooler conditions — 70s and low 80s — going into the weekend, Hernandez said.

“It is going to be a fantastic weekend,” Hernandez said.
