Man killed in I-30 shootout with deputies had large quantity of drugs, officials say

Authorities shared more details into what transpired Wednesday after a police chase ended in a fatal shootout with officers on Interstate 30 in Rockwall County.

According to a news release, the North Texas Sheriff’s Criminal Interdiction Unit and Drug Enforcement Administration agents were carrying out a joint operation when they attempted to stop a car on the interstate. They suspected the driver, 36-year-old Rudy Chavira, of carrying a large number of drugs.

The interdiction unit is comprised of deputies from several different jurisdictions in the region, according the Thursday release from Collin County’s sheriff’s office.

Chavira fled, and authorities chased after him, the release states. The pursuit continued westbound on I-30 until they encountered heavy traffic near Dalrock Road in Rowlett.

Crime in The NewsAuthorities said Chavira came to a stop and opened fire as deputies approached his car. They exchanged gunfire, and Chavira was wounded. He was sent to a local hospital where medical personnel pronounced him dead.

There were no other reports of injuries, according to the unit. A search of his car revealed about 12 kilos of cocaine, authorities said. Court records show he was arrested in 2019 by Arlington police after authorities found almost 8 kilos of cocaine in his car. He faced a federal charge of possessing cocaine with the intent to distribute.

The shootout led to the rush-hour closure of westbound lanes of I-30 at Dalrock Road Wednesday until after 9:30 p.m. That stretch of road runs over and near Lake Ray Hubbard.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
