Cloudy with a few showers this weekend, Monday is an Weather Alert Day

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Our weekend will be filled with clouds, chilly temps, and occasional showers and sprinkles, but a more powerful weather system blowing through Monday has prompted our weather team to declare the first day of the work week an Weather Alert Day.

What can we expect for Veterans Day?

Cloudy and cool. Temperatures will be in the 50s most of the day, barely reaching above 60 degrees by the mid afternoon under cloudy skies and a northerly breeze. We’ll also see a few spotty showers at times. Rain chances around Houston are at 30% (all light sprinkles), whereas the chance of seeing rain along the coast is much higher (70%), but still limited to only light rain.

How is Sunday looking?

Sunday should start dry for most, but it will remain cloudy and chilly with lows in the 50s and highs in the 60s. Rain showers will approach from the southwest as the day progresses, and by the evening widespread showers are expected ahead of Monday’s storm system.

What do we need to prepare for on Monday, and why is it now an Weather Alert Day?

We believe Monday has the potential to be one of those days where we’ll all need to closely monitor the weather as a low pressure system flings heavy rain and gusty winds overhead. Prepare for it to rain much of the day and for streets to possibly flood. Wind gusts along the coast could exceed 40 mph while gusts over Houston could exceed 30 mph. If the low pressure system tracks farther south than we currently expect, then rain totals and wind speeds will go down.

How many inches of rain could we get?

Now through Tuesday we could pick up additional rain totals averaging 1-3″ with higher amounts possible in our coastal counties. The rain will likely be heavier in our coastal counties due to the track of the low pressure system moving by on Monday.

So how long could clouds block out the sun?

It is likely to stay overcast Friday through at least Monday. We currently expect some sunshine to return late Tuesday as the low pressure moves away from us, but if the sky doesn’t clear out before sunset, then we are fairly confident we’ll get a good dose of sunshine on Wednesday.
