What we know about the fatal plane crash near businesses in west Plano

One person is dead after a small plane crashed Tuesday evening near several businesses in an area of west Plano with heavy foot and vehicle traffic.

Social media video showed a crumpled aircraft burning as it sat in a parking lot.

Here’s what we know thus far:

When and where did the plane crash?

The plane crashed in a parking lot in Plano, about 25 miles north of Dallas, near Mama’s Daughters’ Diner at the intersection of Midway Road and Park Boulevard, Plano Fire-Rescue spokesman Daniel Daly said.

The crash took place less than half a mile from Air Park-Dallas Airport, but it’s not clear if the pilot was attempting to land there.

Authorities received reports of the crash shortly before 6 p.m., Daly said at a news conference. Jason Janik, a special contributor towas leaving the parking lot of the Plano Antique Mall when he witnessed the crash a little after 5:40 p.m.

Witnesses described hearing a loud boom and seeing the plane’s right wing dip before it crashed.

How many people were injured?

One person, the pilot of the plane, was killed in the crash, Daly said. Authorities did not release the identity of the person and said their next of kin has not yet been notified.

The plane did not land or collide with anything, he added, but the fire from the crash spread to a nearby parked car that was unoccupied. No one else was believed to be on board.

The mangled remains of the plane could be seen next to a SUV that appeared to have been damaged.

What type of plane was it?

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the pilot was flying a single-engine Mooney M20.

The small series of planes seats four people and was developed by the Mooney International Corporation.

Who is investigating the crash?

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. For any crash, the FAA releases a preliminary accident or incident report, which usually is posted the following business day.

Authorities did not share where the plane initially took off from or its intended final destination.
