3 arrested in connection with fatal shooting at Arlington apartment complex, police say

Three people were arrested in connection with a fatal shooting earlier this month at an Arlington apartment complex that left a 26-year-old man dead, police say.

The U.S. Marshals arrested Brenton Smith, 23; Jaka Livingston, 17; and Ahmed Osman, 19, on capital murder charges, according to Arlington police. Court records show Smith was arrested a day after the Nov. 12 shooting that left Jared Jackson dead. Livingston was arrested Nov. 18, and Osman was arrested Nov. 21.

The three remain in Tarrant County custody as of Tuesday evening. Bail is set at $500,000 each for Smith and Osman, while Livingston’s bail is set at $100,000. It’s unclear if they have attorneys.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of West Arkansas Lane, near South Cooper Street, about 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12, where they found Jackson lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.

Crime in The NewsPolice said he was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, the three were seeking a loan in the form of drugs or money from Jackson when they approached his residence and confronted him in his doorway. Police wrote in the affidavit that they drew their guns and exchanged gunfire with Jackson, striking him multiple times.

As they fled, one of them grabbed Jackson’s handgun and stole it.

According to the affidavit, one witness told police the three suspects walked to Jackson’s apartment, one of them whom he recognized by his nickname “Six.” The witness overheard “Six” had just gotten out of jail and wanted a loan from Jackson, but he refused.

Police wrote they were able to identify “Six” as Smith by checking phone records and comparing a prior booking photo with surveillance footage and doorbell camera footage from the scene of the shooting. Smith was arrested Nov. 5 in an unrelated incident on charges of marijuana possession and unlawful carrying of a weapon, court records show.

A witness also identified Smith in a photo lineup, police wrote in the affidavit. After Smith was arrested, officers interviewed him, and he said Livingston was with him that day along with another person whose full name he did not know.

A relative of Jackson’s later contacted police and told them a phone was dropped by one of the suspects inside Jackson’s apartment, the affidavit said. On the phone case was a credit card wallet and an ID with Osman’s name on it.
