Rain chance returns Friday, cold front to bring storms Saturday evening

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Another big weather change arrives this weekend, and you’ll already feel some of those changes on Friday.

Temperatures this morning are hovering around 60 degrees, which is nearly 20 degrees warmer than it was on Thursday morning. You’ll also feel that the air has more weight to it as moisture levels rise. A disturbance passing through during the day will bring a 30% chance of a passing rain shower or thunderstorms, with the most likely time for rain in the late morning and early afternoon.

When am I most likely to get rain on Saturday?

At this time rain looks most like along and just behind the cold front, which isn’t expected to reach Houston until the 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. hours. Ahead of the front there could be some stray showers in the humid air, but most of Saturday will be dry until the evening comes. Those of you north of Houston could get rain from the front as early as 3 p.m., and those of you near the coast will likely have to wait until closer to 7 p.m. or 8 p.m.

Could any of the storms turn severe?

Yes, some of the storms could turn severe with gusty winds and hail, but it’s unlikely you’ll go under a warning The focus for severe weather will likely end up well northeast of Houston into Louisiana. We do not expect any storms to rotate, so tornadoes are unlikely. The front and storms will sweep through quickly, so flooding is not a concern either with this round of rain. While some rain could linger into the evening, the sky will rapidly clear Saturday night.

How cold will it get behind the front?

Sunday will be a chilly day with a stiff northwest wind gusting up to 35 mph in the morning. Highs will only rebound into the upper 50s! As the wind settles down Sunday night, temperatures are likely to dip into the middle and upper 30s across Houston. It’s looking like frost will form on rooftops and grassy surfaces across much of Southeast Texas by sunrise Monday.
