Arlington man sentenced to 8 years for crash that killed teen, injured 2 others

A 24-year-old Arlington man was sentenced to eight years in prison for his involvement in a crash last year that killed a teenager and injured two people on Interstate 20.

A Tarrant County judge handed down the sentence to Bryce Abernathy Wednesday after he pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge. Authorities said he was suspected of driving 157 mph in a 70-mph zone about 11 p.m. March 15, 2022, on I-20, near McCart Avenue.

Fort Worth police said he crashed into an SUV, killing Shaundi Smallwood, 19, and injuring two passengers.

A grand jury last year charged Abernathy with manslaughter, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

For the other charges, he received 10 years of probation once he completes his prison sentence.
